Every year, 3.7 million newborns die and another 3.3 million babies are stillborn, according to the World Health Organization

Nearly 42 percent of deaths among children younger than 5 years of age occur during the first 28 days of life, and 75 percent of the neonatal deaths occur within the first seven days

Most neonatal deaths are attributed to early births (pre-term), low-birth weight or congenital problems with the baby or mother.

Through advances in treatment, new research initiatives and world-class medical training, UC Irvine is leading the way to creating a healthier future for babies worldwide.
